Cil Paves Her IT Path with Gold

December 2, 2024

Cil was always passionate about technology but wasn’t sure if college was the right option for her. After high school, she planned to start with a minimum-wage, entry-level job. That vision shifted dramatically when she enrolled in Dual Credit IT courses at ICC. While she expected to gain some valuable experience, she never imagined how far her classes would push her forward.

My experience at ICC has been fantastic. It’s one of the best programs in the area. The instructors make the materials easy to understand, and I wouldn’t be where I am without their support.

Professor Eric McCann played a pivotal role in Cil’s success by guiding her through cybersecurity and systems administration courses. His hands-on teaching style made it easier for her to understand the material.

Cisco professor and SkillsUSA advisor Kim Hawthorne also provided invaluable support, guiding Cil through the certifications needed to advance her career.

Thanks to the IT Workforce Accelerator grant, Cil’s training costs were fully covered, allowing her to focus entirely on her education without worrying about finances.

Cil put her knowledge to the test in the SkillsUSA high school division, where she excelled. She competed in Information Technology Services, winning bronze in her first year, silver in her second, and gold at the state level in her third year. She went on to clinch first place at the national level, outshining dozens of competitors.

By the time she reached her senior year, Cil’s dedication was rewarded in a way she never expected. At just 18, the Illinois chapter of SkillsUSA offered her a full-time, salaried IT position, a significant step up from the help desk job she had envisioned.

Reflecting on her journey, Cil urges others to consider ICC. “There are so many opportunities at ICC. Even if you’re not sure about college, it’s an affordable place to take a chance and see where it can take you. You might not think college is the best choice for you, but ICC is an inexpensive place to take that shot and see how it plays out.”
