Leon: From Hardship to Leadership at ICC

May 5, 2025

A registered EMT and former Student Trustee, Leon aspires to become a paramedic and is currently enrolled in the pre-med program.

He has experienced his fair share of challenges in his young life, including homelessness, parental neglect, and a full name change. Despite these hardships, Leon’s resilience shines through, and he remains committed to making a positive impact.

His future plans include the possibility of transferring to the University of Illinois for bioengineering and joining the Naval Academy to be a role model for his sisters, continue his leadership journey, and serve his fellow citizens.

My time as a student, and as the student trustee, here at ICC has really given me the opportunity to grow and fulfill my potential. ICC is one of the best things to ever happen to me, and I’m incredibly grateful.

At ICC, Leon has grown and actively participated in groups and activities, preparing himself to achieve his goals in college and beyond. He hopes to explore his burgeoning interest in politics through opportunities at ICC. Being selected as the Illinois Central College Student Trustee for two years in a row has been an enriching experience for Leon, allowing him to participate in conferences and build his resume.

ICC has become such a place of belonging for Leon that he initially made a 2-hour commute each way to and from ICC before deciding to move to East Peoria, which has also allowed him to contribute to student life.

It is through his strong relationship with ICC, service to his community, and inspiring resiliency that Leon is making great strides toward a bright future.
