Learning by Doing: an Apprenticeship Helped Naethan Jumpstart His Career

After four years in the military, Naethan knew traditional college wasn’t for him. He tried it once and didn’t enjoy sitting in a classroom. But when Liberty Steel & Wire introduced him to a new apprenticeship opportunity through Illinois Central College, something clicked.
“I had already been working there, but this program gave me a way to grow and build skills that will last,” he said.
Naethan entered the Industrial Electrical Technology apprenticeship program at ICC with no prior experience in the field, but the hands-on training and classroom instruction quickly changed that.
At Liberty Steel & Wire, he gained real experience on the job. At ICC, those experiences were reinforced through practical, focused lessons that helped him understand the “why” behind the work.
“I had zero knowledge coming in, but ICC made it feel doable. Now I’m graduating with real skills, a strong support system, and a future I can build on.”
Naethan, ICC Student Apprentice
As an adult learner returning to school, Naethan appreciated the friendly, supportive environment at ICC. He especially connected with instructor Zachary Flinn, whose personality and encouragement made every class feel approachable. “Everyone was friendly and welcoming,” he said. “That stood out to me more than anything.”
Now, Naethan is completing the program with a five-year contract at Liberty Steel & Wire, a strong foundation in electrical technology, and confidence in what’s ahead. He knows the knowledge he’s gained has already set him apart in the field.
“Most of the people I work with are older and didn’t learn this way,” he said. “What I’ve learned is more up to date—and that matters.”
While his long-term plans are still unfolding, Naethan is confident in the direction he’s headed. And for others considering a similar path—his message is clear:
“It’s not as hard as you think—and the benefits last well beyond the classroom.”
Naethan came to ICC to gain practical knowledge. He’s leaving with skills, support, and a clear sense of what’s next.
