Jack Opens Doors with Dual Credit Welding Program
Jack’s ICC journey began in high school when he discovered he could earn Dual Credit for classes he could take during high school to learn a hands-on trade. Coming from a small school with limited options beyond woodshop, Jack was eager to find a program that would build his skills, make him stand out to employers, and help him become self-sufficient. He found that opportunity in the Welding program at ICC.
It’s opened up a lot of doors for me. Instead of going away to tech schools to learn the same thing, I was able to go to ICC during high school and get a head start while still being able to work

The ICC Welding program also gave Jack the opportunity to compete at the SkillsUSA Illinois Elite Career Connections competition. Though he had only been welding for six months, Jack was surprised to win the gold medal against competitors who had been welding for years, some at technical colleges.
Jack credits his success at ICC to his instructor, John Runser. He appreciates John’s diverse teaching methods, ability to simplify complex material, the supportive relationships he forges with students, and the freedom he also gives students to experiment and discover the techniques that work best for them.
Through the program, Jack earned a Welding Operator certificate with labor market value, built friendships with peers from other high schools, and networked with potential employers. The Dual Credit program at ICC opened up many opportunities for Jack, including multiple job offers as a production welder and a chance to work on an offshore drilling rig.
For now, Jack is happy the skills he learned will allow him to obtain a high-demand, higher-wage job while he continues his education at ICC to earn a Welding Specialist certificate. Reflecting on his experiences, Jack says, “School was never my favorite thing, but this program at ICC was one of the best things I’ve ever done.”
ICC gave Jack the confidence, determination, and an understanding of his potential, propelling him toward a brighter future.
