Healing Forward: Jamie’s Journey of Strength and Self-Discovery at ICC

November 18, 2025

At Illinois Central College, transformation happens every day. Students find a community that believes in their potential, supports their growth, and helps them discover new paths forward. For Jamie, that support became the foundation for an experience that changed her life.

When Jamie came to ICC, she found an environment where faculty and staff saw her for who she could become. Encouraged by their patience, kindness, and understanding, she began to believe in herself again. “No one ever made me feel like I was broken. I was met with patience, kindness, and understanding,” Jamie said. “ICC became a place where I didn’t have to hide what I’d been through.”

After surviving a serious car accident that left her with a traumatic brain injury, Jamie had to relearn how to navigate daily life. At ICC, she found more than just recovery. She found a safe and welcoming space to grow, rebuild, and thrive.

ICC gave me the safe space I needed to heal. The people here never made me feel like I had to pretend—I could just be myself, and that made all the difference.

Through pursuing an associate’s degree in social work, Jamie discovered her own capacity to support others. Her coursework not only gave her academic tools, it helped her make sense of her healing and sparked a new sense of purpose. With small class sizes and instructors who took the time to listen, she began to see herself not just as a survivor, but as a future leader in helping others through hardship.

“Everything I was learning, I could apply to my own life,” she said. “It gave me a whole new perspective—and a future I could picture for myself.”

Encouraged by classmates and staff who believed in her, Jamie found her voice and a renewed sense of purpose. She now plans to turn her experience into advocacy by becoming a counselor or support specialist for others navigating trauma, especially those who feel unseen. “ICC reminded me that I’m not alone—and I want to be that reminder for someone else.”

Jamie’s journey shows how education, compassion, and community can spark real healing, and how ICC helps students move forward with confidence and purpose.
