Fueled by Purpose: Eli’s Fire Science Journey

October 21, 2025

Eli’s path to college wasn’t a straight line—but every step has moved him closer to a future with purpose.

After dropping out of high school, he wasn’t sure what his future would look like. But when he enrolled in GED classes at Illinois Central College, things started to shift.

“That experience gave me more confidence than I ever expected,” Eli said. “It made me feel like I could actually do this.”

That confidence carried him straight into the Fire Science program—before he had even passed his final GED test. For the first time in years, he felt motivated by a clear goal: becoming a firefighter.

He was drawn to the hands-on training, the structure of the program, and the chance to build a career where he could help others. But what really made the difference was the way instructors showed up for him—consistently, and with care.

“My instructors’ investment in my success shaped how I handle setbacks—and taught me how to keep moving forward, even when things get hard.”

Sometimes that support went beyond academics. “There were times I struggled getting to class,” Eli said. “Some of my instructors literally helped me with gas money. And when I didn’t understand something, they’d stay late or meet with me after class. They really wanted me to succeed.”

Those moments built more than academic knowledge—they built trust. They helped Eli believe that his success mattered to the people around him.

Even outside the classroom, Eli felt that support. “It meant a lot when Dr. Sheila Quirk-Bailey—the president of the college—would stop in the hallway and ask how I was doing. She didn’t have to do that, but it made me feel like I belonged here.”

Now, with graduation on the horizon, Eli is already thinking about what’s next: a bachelor’s degree, and maybe even a master’s one day. He knows the road ahead won’t always be easy, but he’s ready for it.

“ICC gave me a second chance. And now I feel like I have everything I need to keep going.”
