When Rita Dove was appointed US Poet Laureate in 1993, her works and accomplishments thrust the works of Black women poets into the international spotlight. She was not the first and certainly won’t be the last Black woman to pour her pain and experiences into her craft, however. From Phillis Wheatley to Amanda Gorman, the arc of creativity that is Black women’s use of poetry as a vessel for their voices is long. Because of each woman’s contributions, we can appreciate and study the works of other laureates such as Gwendolyn Brooks and Angela Jackson.
