Katherine’s Nursing Apprenticeship Journey
Katherine came to Illinois Central College with a clear goal and a strong sense of purpose. She had always wanted to become a nurse, and ICC’s Nursing program stood out for its reputation, affordability, and the support she had heard about from others in the community.
What she found here exceeded every expectation.
All of my professors have been amazing. The encouragement you get here from everybody is just incredible. They set you up to succeed.

For Katherine, ICC became more than a place to learn. It became a place of support, understanding, and connection.
“You’re like a family here. The professors are understanding, they work with you, and they truly want you to succeed.”
Katherine is currently completing her Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) certificate, building both the knowledge and confidence she needs for the next step in her journey. Along the way, she has taken advantage of tutoring services and found strength in the encouragement of her instructors, especially Professor Punke, whose support has made a lasting impact.
Beyond the classroom, Katherine’s experience has been shaped by her involvement in the Apprenticeship Program, which has provided both financial support and real-world experience in the field.
Through the program, she is working at Young Minds, a mental health facility, where she is gaining hands-on experience while supporting individuals facing challenges.
“It’s not just preparing me for my exams. It’s preparing me for my future as a nurse. This program has shown me what I’m capable of.”
This opportunity has given her more than clinical experience. It has given her a deeper sense of purpose. Katherine plans to continue working in mental health as a nurse, using her experience to support others with empathy, understanding, and care.
Looking ahead, her path is clear. She plans to work as an LPN while continuing her education through the bridge program at ICC to become a registered nurse, building a career that allows her to care for others while providing for her family.
