SURTK 100 ORIENTATION TO SURGICAL TECHNOLOGY

0.5 Credit Hours (OC)
This course is designed to introduce students to the profession of surgical technology. Concepts include the basic principles and techniques of surgical technology, handwashing, scrubbing, gowning, gloving as well as preparing a sterile field.


SURTK 105 PRINCIPLES AND PRACTICES OF SURGICAL SERVICES

3 Credit Hours (OC)
This course is designed to provide the surgical technology or sterile processing student with the knowledge and skills needed to function in the health care setting. Students will gain knowledge of the global aspect of health care as it pertains to the surgical technologist and will acquire an understanding of how to utilize resources to become lifelong learners. Hospital organization, safety, legal issues, cultural diversity, ethical issues and death and dying will also be discussed.


SURTK 120 INTRODUCTION TO SURGICAL TECHNOLOGY

4 Credit Hours (OC)
This course is a study of operating room fundamentals including aseptic technique, patient care, preparation, and maintenance and care of equipment and supplies. Didactic and practical experiences are designed to prepare the student to function as a surgical technologist.

Pre-requisite: Acceptance to the surgical technology curriculum and BIOL 140 with a grade of "C" or better, or concurrent enrollment


SURTK 121 FUNDAMENTALS OF SURGICAL TECHNOLOGY I

6 Credit Hours (OC)
This course is a continuation of Introduction to Surgical Technology with emphasis on acquiring knowledge and skills of scrubbing and assisting during surgical procedures in the operating room and delivery room. Specific areas of study include: surgical landmarks, surgical anatomy, incisions and terminology related to laparotomy, hernias, breast, veins, and rectal, obstetrical and gynecological surgical procedures.

Pre-requisite: SURTK 120 with a grade of "C" or better


SURTK 122 FUNDAMENTALS OF SURGICAL TECHNOLOGY II

4 Credit Hours (OC)
This course is a continuation of Fundamentals of Surgical Technology I with emphasis on acquiring knowledge and skills of scrubbing and assisting during surgical procedures in the operating room. Specific areas of study include genitourinary and orthopedics systems.

Pre-requisite: SURTK 121 with a grade of "C" or better


SURTK 130 PHARMACOLOGY FOR THE SURGICAL TECHNOLOGIST

1 Credit Hours (OC)
This course is a study of pharmacology and anesthesia. It will deal with all aspects of pharmacology: drug sources, forms, nomenclature, route of administration, classifications, pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, drug handling techniques, identification, supplies needed, transfer of medications to the sterile field, commonly used medications, general anesthesia, nerve conduction blocks, history, and team member roles during anesthesia.

Pre-requisite: Acceptance into the Surgical Technology Program


SURTK 141 SURGICAL TECHNOLOGY, CLINICAL PRACTICE I

3 Credit Hours (OC)
This course provides supervised clinical experience with a variety of perioperative assignments to align with skills concurrently learned in Fundamentals of Surgical Technology I.

Pre-requisite: Concurrent enrollment in SURTK 121


SURTK 142 SURGICAL TECHNOLOGY, CLINICAL PRACTICE II

1 Credit Hours (OC)
This course provides supervised clinical experience with a variety of perioperative assignments to align with skills concurrently learned in Fundamentals of Surgical Technology II.

Pre-requisite: Concurrent enrollment in SURTK 122


SURTK 210 FUNDAMENTALS OF SURGICAL TECHNOLOGY III

7 Credit Hours (OC)
This course is a continuation of Fundamentals of Surgical Technology II with emphasis on acquiring knowledge and skills of scrubbing and assisting during surgical procedures in the operating room. Specific areas of study include neurosurgery, thoracic, cardiovascular, burns, plastics, oral, ophthalmic, maxillofacial, and otorhinolaryngology.

Pre-requisite: SURTK 122 and BIOL 210, both with a grade of "C" or better.


SURTK 211 ADVANCED FUNDAMENTALS OF SURGICAL TECHNOLOGY

7 Credit Hours (OC)
This course outlines advanced techniques in surgical technology and is a continuation of the fundamentals of surgical technology series. This course will focus on suturing and knot tying techniques, professionalism and interpersonal skills, continuing education, and resume writing.

Pre-requisite: Completion of SURTK 210 with a grade of "C" or better and current certification in CPR


SURTK 240 SURGICAL TECHNOLOGY, CLINICAL PRACTICE III

3 Credit Hours (OC)
This course provides supervised clinical experience with a variety of perioperative assignments to align with skills concurrently learned in Fundamentals of Surgical Technology III.

Pre-requisite: Concurrent enrollment in SURTK 210


SURTK 250 SYNTHESIS OF SURGICAL TECHNOLOGY

1.5 Credit Hours (OC)
This course is a synthesis of knowledge, attitude and skills gained by SURTK program students to prepare for certification testing, resume writing, and interviewing skills. Mock testing and job seeking skills are highlighted.

Pre-requisite: Departmental approval


SURTK 255 INDEPENDENT STUDY

1 Credit Hours (OC)
This course provides the opportunity to work on a technical project, research, or other specialized study related to individual academic needs. A written plan for the independent study project is developed with a faculty member (including a detailed description of the project, the number of credit hours assigned to it, the evaluative criteria to be used, and other relevant matters), and the project is carried out under the periodic direction of the faculty member. The written plan is submitted to the dean/associate dean for approval and remains on file within the department, together with a final written report submitted to the faculty member by the student. Repeatable up to a maximum of five semester hours of credit.
