FAFSA News : IRS Data Retrieval Tool currently unavailable

Students filing their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the 2017-18 Academic Year will need to provide information from their 2015 tax returns when filing.

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) recently announced the IRS Data Retrieval Tool(DRT) is currently unavailable as part of the FAFSA Application. The Data Retrieval Tool allows students filing their FAFSA to automatically look up and include tax return information from previous tax returns. The FAFSA determines student eligibility for different forms of aid based on the information reported in taxes from the previous year.

Students can still manually provide requested financial information from their tax returns when filing the FAFSA. Information provided by the IRS states:

This does not limit families’ ability to apply for aid. Applicants have other options while the data tool is unavailable. Applicants filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and applying for an income-driven repayment (IDR) plan can manually provide the requested financial information from copies of their tax returns. The online FAFSA and IDR application remain operational, and applicants can continue filing the FAFSA or applying for an IDR plan as they normally would.

Input your tax info using a copy of your 2015 income tax return. If a copy is not available, you can get one from the tax software you used or request one from your tax preparer. You can also request a tax transcript from the IRS:
