Building a Strong Foundation

The world was a lot different back in 1993 when Marci Foutch first came to Illinois Central College. The internet was in its infancy, landline phones were still a big thing and Beanie Babies were just taking off. However, for Foutch, there was one thing that was just as important back then as it is today. That’s the the foundation of a quality education she received at ICC.

“Illinois Central College really gave me a good foundation to get started in [Occupational Therapy]. That foundation gave me the jumping pad that I needed!”

Foutch’s drive to be in the medical field came when her grandfather had a massive heart attack when she was 16 years old.

“He was in the hospital for 6 months… Unfortunately, he did not make it out, but just seeing the interaction between the healthcare professionals, patient and family was very assuring to me.”

From there, Marci participated in a medical camp in high school and became interested in Occupational Therapy. Fresh out of high school and living in Peoria Heights, Marci decided to enroll at ICC in the Occupational Therapy Assistant Program.

“Coming to ICC was a good experience for me. My professors were wonderful and the class we had in the OTA program was great!”

Marci has now worked in Occupational Therapy for 23 years and is thankful that she was able to get a degree without taking on loads of debt.
“I’ve been listening to coworkers in our field… and they are talking about being in hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt [to get an education]. The biggest spring board for me was to not have that student debt and still be able to flourish in my career.”

Looking back over the years Marci is glad her life led her on the journey it did.

“Over the course of my career, I have been fortunate to gain experience and develop lasting relationships with my peers and patients. I have seen my salary triple over my years. All of this is possible because of the quality education I received from my instructors at ICC along with the financial services staff and counselors.”

Marci now has children of her own with one already attending ICC and the other getting ready to attend ICC in the Fall.

“There have been so many changes since I went to school here. I saw a bit of the [Health Careers Facility] and it was just amazing — seeing the surgery setup even down to having the scrub sinks available for them. The simulation labs are amazing too…they really have some great opportunities here.”

Marci’s daughter Alexa is looking forward to starting in the Fall after her campus visit.

“The professors seem very involved in your education here…they seem to genuinely care about your future.”
