Talking Points :: Apprenticeship/Sponsorship Programs and Mechanical/Technical Recruitment Event

Below are suggested Talking Points for employees to use when discussing the apprenticeship and sponsorship program opportunities at ICC, as well as the upcoming Mechanical/Technical Recruitment events.


ICC is committed to increasing the percentage of adults with credentials beyond high school from the current 40 percent to 60 percent. Studies have shown that, to be economically vibrant, at least 60 percent of adults should have a credential.

Businesses are reporting a “skills gap” between the skills employers in the Greater Peoria region need and the skills potential employees have. This leads to businesses looking elsewhere to fill these positions.

ICC has programs that pay a student’s tuition and/or provide a paid workforce experience. These opportunities address both the need for high demand jobs resulting in a family-sustaining wage.

The College is aligning its programs and services to partner with businesses to fill these skills gaps, particularly in the areas of manufacturing, information technology and health care.

Industrial programs— including ICC Industrial Maintenance, General Motors Automotive Service Educational Program (GM-ASEP), and Caterpillar Diesel Powered Equipment Technology programs – are the first of several that the college and local business partners have identified as having urgent need for skilled employees.

These programs provide a blend of both in-class and hands-on training experience toward a credential and jobs with a family-sustaining wage. The partnering organizations will be responsible for providing the work experience to ensure professional skills upon completion and ICC will provide the in-class training.

Successful apprenticeship candidates receive:

  • 300-450 hours of coursework for each year of apprenticeship
  • A guaranteed $13.00 minimum hourly payment
  • Full tuition, fees and books

Requirements: Candidates for the apprenticeship program must first apply to ICC and then be screened and pre-qualified prior to company interviews.

Mechanical/Technical Recruitment events :: June 26 and 29

ICC will host two informational recruitment sessions for potential students interested in learning about its new industrial maintenance apprenticeship program and other programs that help students connect with employers from the beginning of their education and attend college for little to no cost.

The events are free and open to the public. They are scheduled on two different dates and at different locations for participant convenience but will offer identical informational content.

Participants may choose from one of two sessions:

  •  June 26
    • 5 to 7 pm
    • Arbor Hall, Peoria Campus
  • June 29
    • 10 am to noon
    • Agricultural and Industrial Technologies (AIT) Building, East Peoria Campus
  • Each session will begin with an overview of the programs, as well as opportunities available with partnering organizations.
  • Participants also will receive information on sponsorship programs, including General Motors Automotive Service Educational Program (GM-ASEP) and Caterpillar Diesel Powered Equipment Technology programs.
  • Admissions Office staff will be available to provide information on additional ICC industrial technology programs and options for fulfilling pre-requisites for the sponsored programs.
  • A tour of the AIT Building classrooms and labs will be available during the Friday session at the East Peoria Campus. Attendees from either session may register for the Friday tour.
