ICC Offers New Practical Nurse Certificate for Military Medical Corpsman Beginning Fall 2015

Illinois Central College will offer the new Practical Nurse Certificate for Military Medical Corpsman for the fall 2015 semester, which begins Monday, August 17. Registration for the fall semester opens Monday, April 6.

The intensive, eight-week curriculum is available to veterans and active duty service members who have completed their medical corpsman training and wish to pursue a career as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). Upon successful completion of the program, participants will be eligible to sit for the NCLEX-PN examination to become an LPN.

To qualify for the program, veterans and active duty service members must have successfully completed the Medical Education and Training Campus (METC) Basic Medical Technician Corpsman Program within the last five years. Alternatively, participants with at least one year of experience using corpsman skills within the last five years also may be eligible.

ICC is the third college to offer the program, which was designed as a cooperative effort among ICC, the College of DuPage and Joliet Junior College, in collaboration with the Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs and the National Governors Association for Veterans.

“The program is specifically designed for military medics with a goal to create a pathway for them to fill curriculum gaps and eventually begin working as a licensed practical nurse,” said ICC Dean of Health Careers Wendee Guth. “I am pleased that this collaborative effort will respond to the educational needs of our veterans and enhance their opportunities for a seamless transition to a civilian career.”

Veterans may utilize available veteran education benefits, including Post-9/11 GI Bill and the Illinois Veterans’ Grant, to cover eligible program expenses.
