ICC Guest Artists Series Presents “An Evening with Patsy Cline” on October 23

The songs and spirit of a female pioneer of country music will be showcased on stage at Illinois Central College when the ICC Guest Artists Series presents An Evening with Patsy Cline on Friday, October 23, at 7:30 pm, in the ICC Performing Arts Center in East Peoria.

The one-night-only event features the music of Cline, along with some of the stories behind the songs. The performance features veteran Branson performer Camille Davis, who has sung the music of Cline in several different professional shows, accompanied by a four-piece band.

According to Davis, Cline’s style of singing and crossover appeal helped secure her reputation as a country music legend.

“Nobody—no woman anyway—had really crossed over from country to pop, but she did,” Davis said. “‘I Fall to Pieces’ was No. 2 on the country chart, but it was No. 12 on pop charts. It’s kind of like Elvis was the first one to do what he did, and his persona is still just so huge that it just keeps carrying over, and I think hers is the same kind of thing.

“She was a pioneer and she was the first one to cross over and to sing songs in a different way. It was a completely different style of singing that she was doing. Her voice is big; I call it ‘singing like a big girl.’ There are a lot of women who don’t open up and sing what they could sing; they squeeze down and sing like a little girl. And Patsy had this great big voice, and she was not afraid to break out of the mold which at that point was like Loretta Lynn, Patsy Montana, Kitty Wells—very stereotypically hillbilly country, very twangy and a lot closer to bluegrass than what Patsy was doing.”

LifeLine Pilots is the highlighted community partner for this event. The Community Partner program of the ICC Guest Artists Series highlights a non-profit group or organization which has some kind of tie-in to each performance.

Tickets cost $25 for the general public and $10 for students. Tickets can be purchased online at ArtsAtICC.com or by calling the box office at (309) 694-5136.
