ESL Instructor Robin Halsey presents at MIDTESOL Annual Conference, “Bridges to Success”
Robin Halsey, adjunct instructor of English as a Second Language in ICC’s College and Career Readiness department, presented “Promoting Academic Literacy(ies) for Adult ELLs: Activities and Strategies” at the annual conference of Mid-America TESOL in Omaha, Nebraska, on September 27-28. The presentation offered evidence-based insights into the concepts of academic language and academic literacies. It discussed research findings suggesting instructors and administrators of adult ESL programs should consider adopting a blended approach to the instruction of adult English learners. Halsey noted that such an approach may provide the enhanced rigor that stakeholders are demanding from grant-funded Adult Education programs, while encouraging adult English learners to participate in College & Career Readiness programs long enough to prepare for higher education and satisfying employment. In addition, the presentation offered strategies, activities, and resources for instructors of adult English learners.
