Why I Chose my Major

It can be tricky when it comes to choosing a major, especially when considering your future career. My name is Carson Williamsen, and here is how I chose my current major.

For my career, I’ve always wanted to do something entertaining or something I would enjoy. It has been a dream of mine to work for a professional sports team. I’m also very good at writing and figured I could work alongside a team’s social media department.

I chose to major in Communications when I enrolled at Illinois Central College. After graduating from high school, I wanted to start close to home. That’s why I chose ICC, I was able to focus on my postsecondary education while being close to my old town. It has also given me an opportunity to further my communications knowledge with my student job.

I currently work for ICC’s Marketing and Communications Department as a student employee. I’ve had this job for roughly three months and I enjoy every second of it. As a part of my job, I maintain The Den. I’m in charge of creating new blog posts and interactive surveys each week. It is a unique way for me to connect with the students and staff here at ICC.

After ICC, I plan to transfer to Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis. The university offers my desired major, which is Sports Media. At IUPUI, their sports media program offers an internship with the Indianapolis Colts football team. It’s a city filled with opportunities, especially with all of the different sports organizations. I will gain great experience for my career through my time in Indianapolis.

ICC offers a free, online tool to students, allowing them to discover majors and careers based on their interests. You list off your interests and it’ll find majors and in-demand careers related to your search. Check out Career Coach to learn more.

This week, the weekly question asks what your dream vacation looks like. Check it out and share your responses at ICC Weekly Question #3.
