#3 Cougars’ Defense Suffocates #5 Parkland

The #3 ICC women’s basketball team used a suffocating defensive performance to pick up a 77-46 victory over #5 Parkland on Sunday afternoon in Region 24/M-WAC action at Ramsey Gym. The Cougars allowed just two Parkland points in the third quarter to go on a 31-3 run while holding Parkland to 24% shooting (16-67) for the game to get the win.
ICC sped out to a 7-2 lead on Derria Edwards and Kayla Gordon scores but Parkland answered with a run and went up 14-13 at the 2:09 mark. The Cougars answered with an 8-0 run to close the first period, as Dayja Evans nailed a three-pointer from the top of the key (assist Edwards), Kristyn Mitchell had an old-fashioned three-point play (assist Evans), and Keijah Gray scored inside (assist Mitchell) to put ICC up 21-14 at the quarter break. Mitchell and Nia Williams hit jumpers for a 28-17 advantage and the Cougars took a double-digit lead at 36-26 at halftime as Gordon banked in a trey at the buzzer.
Cierra McNamee helped the Cougars get off on the right foot with an offensive put-back and then took a charge on the defensive end, followed by a Sh’coria Metts offensive put-back and a score by Mitchell to open the lead to 42-26. The offense kept rolling as Metts hit a jumper (assist Camryn Stafford) and Edwards added a long-range bomb (assist McNamee), but it was the stellar defense that helped the lead increase as the Cougars worked together to keep PC scoreless. Courtney Jones took the Cougars’ second charge of the quarter, while Gordon and Jones hit back-to-back treys (assists Jones & Samaiya Buchanan) to double up the lead at 53-26. Stafford got a defensive rebound and outletted to Gordon who hit a sprinting McNamee for a layup which completed a furious 19-0 ICC run for a 55-26 lead with 2:45 to play. Parkland broke their drought with their lone field goal of the quarter but the Cougars closed on a 6-0 run on a Buchanan layup (assist Gordon), steal and layup by Williams, another charge taken by McNamee, and steal and layup by Evans for a 61-28 lead going into the final frame. The fourth period saw the stymying defense continue as ICC rolled to the finish.
