#8 Lake Land Thumps #3 Cougars

Game Date: March 18, 2021

Twenty-six turnovers and a lack of intensity on the defensive end by the #3 ICC women’s basketball team led to a 70-60 loss at #8 Lake Land on Thursday afternoon in Region 24 action. The loss breaks a nine-game win-streak and puts the Cougars in a must-win situation on Sunday to possibly host one of the district tournaments in early April.

ICC couldn’t have gotten off to a worse start. They turned the ball over on eight of their first ten possessions, which the Lakers cashed into a 15-0 lead, making them play catch-up the rest of the afternoon. Courtney Jones, Sh’coria Metts, Kristyn Mitchell, Samaiya Buchanan, & Ayanna Gibbs gave the Cougars some life & cut the Laker lead to 21-11 after one quarter. ICC cut the deficit to 23-17 on baskets by Cam Stafford and Kayla Gordon but then four straight miscues and poor transition defense allowed a 14-3 LLC run to the half, giving Lake Land a 39-20 halftime lead.

The Cougars finally got some defensive stops to string together a 7-0 run on two Gordon scores and a Cierra McNamee bucket to draw to within 39-27 but then the defense let up and LLC pushed their lead back to 52-35 after three quarters. Down 59-39, the Cougars dug in their heels defensively and pulled to within 65-56, but they couldn’t ever overcome the poor start.

It should come as no surprise that we only reached one our game goals and that was winning Blue Crew rebounding.

Next up: The Cougars, now 15-2, will host #5 Parkland on Sunday in Ramsey Gym in an important Region 24 game. Livestream will be available on the ICC Athletics YouTube channel.
