#4 Cougars’ Defense Dismantles Spoon
Game Date: March 11, 21
A strong defensive effort led the #4 ICC women’s basketball team to a 70-40 victory over Region 24 and M-WAC foe Spoon River College on Thursday night at Ramsey Gym. The Cougars held SRC to 23% field goal shooting and controlled the boards 53-35 while dishing out 23 assists to get the win.
Kayla Gordon scored off the jump ball on a nice pass from Ayanna Gibbs to get the Cougars off on the right foot. The frontline of Cierra McNamee, Gibbs, and Kristyn Mitchell scored the rest of the points in the quarter on offensive rebounds or baskets in the paint, but the Cougar defense was a step slow and gave up second chances to the Snappers as ICC held just a 14-13 lead after the first quarter.
Derria Edwards found Stafford on the block for an easy score to open the second period and then the Cougar defense woke up and took control of the game. Gibbs forced a steal and hit Derria Edwards for a layup and then Edwards assisted Gordon on a three-ball and then hit Stafford for an old-fashioned three-point play to put ICC up 22-13. Edwards corralled a defensive board, hit a sprinting Gibbs, who hit Stafford for a score to go up 24-15. Gibbs took a charge on the next possession, and then Nia Williams chased down a loose ball and scurried back into the front court to nail a three-pointer (assist Gordon) followed by a Samaiya Buchanan steal and assist to Gordon for another layup, putting ICC up 29-15. Gordon and Buchanan hit back-to-back treys (assists Keijah Gray & Williams) and all of a sudden the Cougars were up 35-15. Gray & Mitchell scored inside and ICC took a 43-17 halftime lead.
The Cougars kept the game out of reach in the second half, using stingy defense and a balanced attack, as every ICC player scored. Dayja Evans had two nice drives to the hoop, Gibbs took another charge, and Gray & Mitchell kept things working on the inside to give ICC a 58-25 lead heading into the fourth. Jones took another charge in the fourth on the defensive end, while she, Gray, and Gordon hit buckets as the Cougars coasted to the final buzzer.
