#3 Cougars Victorious in ‘Be The Change’ Game

Game Date: March 14, 2021

The #3 ICC women’s basketball team picked up a 71-44 win over Danville Area in Ramsey Gym on Sunday afternoon in a game that at times resembled a roller coaster ride more than a sporting event. The game saw the Cougars go on a 22-2 run in the 2nd quarter, a DACC 17-3 run late in the 3rd/early 4th quarter, and then an 18-0 Cougar burst to end the game for the final margin. The game was the Cougars’ inaugural “Be The Change” game as both teams (and the MBB teams) wore “Be The Change” t-shirts to promote equality, social justice and celebrate diversity.

ICC started slowly, going scoreless for nearly the first five minutes until Courtney Jones hit a runner to get ICC going. Ayanna Gibbs, Keijah Gray, Dayja Evans, and Jones all scored field goals to carry the Cougars to a 13-8 first quarter lead (assists by Edwards, Gibbs, Cierra McNamee, & Evans). Nia Williams got a steal and layup and then nailed a three-pointer (assist Kayla Gordon) to get the first big run started. After a McNamee offensive board, Williams found Camryn Stafford for a three-pointer and then Stafford got a board and tapped the ball to McNamee for a layup putting ICC up 23-9. Gibbs then snagged a rebound and kicked to Evans for another trey and then Edwards assisted Gray and McNamee for buckets as the Cougars took a 34-11 advantage into recess.

After shooting a meager 19% (5-26) in the first half, the Jaguars found their shooting eye in the third period, going 8-12 from the field while ICC had five turnovers and shot just 3-10 for the quarter, allowing DACC to trim the Cougar lead down to 51-36. DACC continued their energetic play, going on an 8-2 run to open the fourth and draw to within 53-44 with 7:55 left. And that’s when the Cougars decided to get back on the fun part of the roller coaster and went on an 18-0 run until the final buzzer. Highlights during the second fun run was a charge taken by Gordon, a steal by Evans and assist by Edwards to McNamee, two scores by Stafford, (assists Edwards & Buchanan) and a rebound and coast-to-coast layup by Gordon. Williams drained another three-ball (assist Gordon), Gordon got a steal that led to a Buchanan layup, & Kristyn Mitchell got a basket (assist Buchanan) to finish off the scoring.
