Edwards Leads #6 Cougars Over #5 Cobras
Game Date: March 4, 2021
Derria Edwards 27 points spearheaded a 74-70 win for the #6 ICC women’s basketball team over #5 Parkland on Thursday night in Champaign. The win helps ICC keep pace with both Parkland & Lake Land in the Region 24 race and moves the Cougars’ overall record to 11-1.
ICC turned the ball over on three of their first five possessions which helped Parkland get an early 16-10 lead but Edwards hit three free throws and got a steal and layup to get the Cougars on track. Ayanna Gibbs scored on a nice baseline spin move, Edwards took a charge, and Sh’coria Metts found Gibbs inside as the Cougars took a 19-18 first-quarter lead.
ICC opened the second quarter on an 8-2 run with Kayla Gordon assisting on two Metts’s treys and a Cierra McNamee jumper to go up 27-20. Gibbs found Kristyn Mitchell for a three-pointer and Nia Williams for a score to go up 34-24. Courtney Jones took a charge, but Cobra free throws trimmed the Cougar lead to 36-30 at the half.
Edwards came out of the half with her foot on the gas as she hit a layup and found McNamee and Gordon for scores to push the lead back up to 42-34. Parkland trimmed the deficit to 45-41 on more free throws but the Cougar defense forced three straight turnovers which led to five Edwards’s points and a layup by Williams to go back up 54-43. The Cobras closed the quarter on an 8-2 run so ICC took a 56-51 lead into the fourth.
Edwards drove the lane for a hoop, found McNamee for another layup, and then nailed a three-pointer to put ICC up 67-55 with 5:44 remaining but fouls mounted for ICC, leading to eight Cobra freebies to cut the ICC lead down to 67-63. The defense saved the day again as Williams snagged two steals and then Samaiya Buchanan had a huge assist to Camryn Stafford to put ICC up 69-63. Gibbs hit Williams on a beautiful backdoor cut and then Edwards forced a jump ball on defense and took another charge as ICC led 71-63 with 43 seconds remaining.
