Blue Crew, defense power #6 ICC past #10 Loggers

Game Date: March 7, 2021

A strong second-half defensive effort and a big performance from the Blue Crew powered the #6 ICC women’s basketball team to a 78-63 win over #10 Lincoln Land on Sunday afternoon in Springfield. ICC held the Loggers to ten points in the pivotal third quarter while the Blue Crew won their scoring battle 32-6 to get the win.

The Cougars got off to a great start, scoring on eight of their first ten possessions to bolt out to a 16-5 lead against the Logger zone. Scores came from Kayla Gordon & Derria Edwards assisting each other on treys, Edwards had two drives to the hoop, Cam Stafford & Keijah Gray had put-backs, and Sh’coria Metts hit a runner. Nia Williams added another three-ball (assist Edwards) and Gordon hit a layup to give the Cougars a 21-15 lead after one. In the second period, Ayanna Gibbs snagged two steals that led to a layup of her own & one from Edwards but LLCC kept pace with hot shooting as ICC held a 36-32 halftime lead.

Edwards hit a trey on the opening second-half possession (assist Gordon) and Cierra McNamee had a bucket inside but it was the Cougar defense that made the biggest impact, allowing only two Logger scores on the first 11 possessions. The Cougars forced five turnovers, including two shot-clock violations and a five-second call to open up a 47-36 lead as Stafford nailed a trey & Gibbs added two scores to put ICC up 53-42 heading into the fourth. The defense stayed strong, allowing the transition game to get rolling as McNamee, Gordon, Gray, McNamee, & Samaiya Buchanan all scored to increase the lead to 70-47 with 4:23 to play. The Loggers had a late scoring flurry and ICC had four turnovers in the last few minutes, but the outcome was all but decided as ICC coasted to the win.
