Edwards & Cougar Express Handle Blazers
Game Date: Feb 25, 2021
Derria Edwards’s career high 28 points led the #7 ICC women’s basketball team to a 91-43 victory over John Wood Community College in Region 24/M-WAC action at Ramsey Gym on Thursday night, Feb 25. The 5’2 guard had all the tools in her toolbox working, as she shot 10-12 from the field, which included a 5-7 effort from three-point range to go along with 5 rebounds & 2 charges taken. Running mate Kayla Gordon added 15 points and 5 assists, while Kristyn Mitchell pitched in with 13 points and 5 rebounds. Impressive as those individual stats were, it was the defensive effort of the entire “Cougar Express” in the second half that got the squad fired up as every player up and down the lineup played with a disciplined reckless abandon which led to the win.
After a bevy of turnovers to start the game, the Cougars shot out to a 21-6 first quarter lead behind two treys by Edwards, one by Camryn Stafford, and one by Dayja Evans (assists by Gordon, Ayanna Gibbs, Courtney Jones, Sh’coria Metts). The defense was on point in the first quarter, holding JW to 2-14 field goal shooting, but then let up as the Blazers drew back to 25-13. An offensive put-back by Mitchell, charge taken and three-pointer by Edwards (assist Metts) made the score 35-21 and then Gordon and Edwards teamed up for an 8-0 run in the final two minutes of the half which gave ICC a 43-24 halftime lead.
Nia Williams snagged two steals which led to back-to-back treys by Edwards (assists Gordon & Williams) and pushed the lead out to 53-24. Keijah Gray and Gordon added layups to keep the Cougar train moving and then Dayja Evans got in on the fun with a three-ball (assist Jones) as ICC posted a 62-27 lead. A charge taken by Ayanna Gibbs got the Cougars fired up and then a steal and layup by Gibbs finished off the strong third quarter as the Cougars led 71-30. Gordon cashed a steal into a layup and Mitchell added a three-pointer (assist Gibbs) as ICC continued the onslaught. The defensive effort stayed tough as Cierra McNamee took a charge and layups by Mitchell, Gordon, and McNamee finished off the contest.
