Balance, defense lead to win over Lewis & Clark

Game Date: Feb 28, 2021

A balanced attack and a scrappy defense helped the #7 ICC women’s basketball team to an 84-50 win over Lewis & Clark on Sunday afternoon in Region 24/M-WAC action in Godfrey. The Cougars dished out 21 assists, pulled down 50 rebounds, and the Blue Crew outscored the Trailblazers 40-1 to get the win.

The first quarter was a see-saw affair as LCCC was hitting from long-range in the early going. The Cougars kept pace on layups by Kayla Gordon and Camryn Stafford and then Kristyn Mitchell assisted Courtney Jones and Nia Williams for scores but the Trailblazers took an 18-17 lead after one. A Cierra McNamee basket (assist Stafford) and Ayanna Gibbs bucket (assist Dayja Evans) on the first two possessions gave ICC the lead for good. Nia Williams kick-started the Cougar defense with a layup and ICC went on a 13-2 run to close the half to take a 34-23 halftime lead.

McNamee scored on a nice feed from Stafford to open the half and then Williams, Gordon, & Edwards went to work on the press to swipe three steals and cash into points to open up a 45-23 just two minutes into the half. The Cougars kept rolling as Sh’coria Metts nailed a three-pointer (assist Jones) and Gibbs found Jones for a layup to push the lead to 55-30. Keijah Gray and Gordon scored inside to give ICC a 63-32 lead after three.

The fourth quarter saw several nice offensive possessions as the Cougars crashed the boards and shared the ball well. Williams hit a three-pointer (assist McNamee) and Jones found Mitchell for a layup as the Cougars cruised to the final horn.
