Blue Crew Leads Way to Take Down Triton

Dayja Evans’s five three-pointers helped the #7 ICC women’s basketball team to an 86-37 beatdown of Triton College in non-conference action at Ramsey Gym on Tuesday evening, Feb 23. Evans went 5-6 from downtown to net a career high 15 points and Kristyn Mitchell added 14 points to help the Blue Crew outscore the Triton bench 44-10. Camryn Stafford also added 14 points while Kayla Gordon had an overall solid effort with 10 points, 7 rebounds, and 7 assists as ICC shot 57% from the field (and held TC to 24%) and dished out 27 assists to get the win.
ICC led from start to finish, darting out to an 11-4 lead behind two Stafford baskets and one each by Sh’coria Metts and Ayanna Gibbs (three assists by Gordon & one by Metts). Mitchell scored the next seven points as ICC closed the first quarter on a 10-2 run to take a 23-12 lead after the first quarter. The Cougars struggled taking care of the ball at times but played good defense and created steals to go up 35-15 on two baskets by Keijah Gray (assists Mitchell) as ICC settled for a 39-17 edge at half.
Gibbs, Mitchell, and Stafford scored to put ICC up 45-21 and then Evans heated up like a microwave, splashing in three treys in a two-minute span (assists Derria Edwards, Samaiya Buchanan, & Cierra McNamee) to break the game open even more. McNamee took a charge on the defensive end and added two scores (assists Edwards & Evans) and then Nia Williams hit a three-ball (assist Edwards) as ICC took a 68-28 advantage heading into the fourth. Baskets by Mitchell, McNamee, and Gordon kept ICC on the right track as the Cougars coasted to the finish.

Game goals are back! About halfway through the season, each Cougar team sets game goals to reach as a “game within a game” to help focus on winning the real game on the court. The ’20-21 squad has set these goals for each game the rest of the season:
- less than 20 turnovers
- opponent shoot less than 35%
- rebound margin of +14
- get a shot on each possession of each quarter
- do not allow opponent to score on final possession of each quarter
- win 3 out of 4 quarters
- win Blue Crew scoring
- win Blue Crew rebounding
- shoot better than 70% from FT line
- take a charge

ICC is now 8-1 overall (3-1 in Region 24 play, 3-0 in M-WAC) and will host John Wood on Thursday at 5:00 pm in Region 24/M-WAC action at Ramsey Gym. The game will be shown live on the Cougars’ Athletics YouTube channel.
