ICC Outlasts Spoon for Win

The #6 ICC women’s basketball team outlasted Spoon River on Sunday to grab an 89-67 win in Canton in MWAC/Region 24 action. The ladies took four charges and dished out 25 assists on the afternoon to move their record to 7-1 overall, 3-0 in the M-WAC, and 3-1 in Region 24 standings.

ICC was a little sluggish at the onset but got rolling as Kayla Gordon & Nia Williams each scored seven points to give ICC a 22-19 lead. The Cougars snapped the ball around like a hot potato against the Snappers’ zone and extended their lead to 38-31 as Sh’coria Metts and Derria Edwards each hit three-pointers but SRC was also scoring on the offensive end so ICC took just a 41-37 lead into halftime. The Blue & Gold did take two charges in the quarter, one each by Edwards & Camryn Stafford, and shared the ball well as all 8 of their field goals came on assists (Stafford, 3 by Edwards, 2 by Ayanna Gibbs, and 2 by Samaiya Buchanan).

The Cougars worked to get most of their shots in the paint in the third quarter and shot a sizzling 67% because of that, with the frontline of Cierra McNamee, Kristyn Mitchell, and Stafford combining for 18 points in the frame, but the Spoon stayed within striking distance as they were also converting on their scoring opportunities and trailed only 68-57 heading into the final quarter. Kayla Gordon & McNamee took charges to give the defense a lift.

The ICC depth finally wore on SRC allowing the Cougars to break the game open as Edwards went on a personal 7-0 run on an assist from Gibbs, a layup on her own, and a three-pointer from the wing (assist Sh’coria Metts) to put ICC up 75-59. The Blue & Gold finished strong, closing the game on a 14-2 run to get the win.
