Cougars Fall to Lakers in Top 10 Tilt
The #6 ICC women’s basketball team six-game winning streak was halted at the hands of #7 Lake Land College as the Cougars dropped a 70-55 decision Thursday night Feb 18 at Ramsey Gym in a Region 24 contest. The Cougars shot well enough (47%) on the offensive end but didn’t get enough shots due to 29 turnovers and then couldn’t stop the Laker offense (who shot 52%). ICC’s record is now 6-1 overall and 2-1 in Region 24.
The Cougars struggled getting into an offensive flow as the teams played to a 10-all tie midway through the first quarter but Lake Land was the sharper team and capitalized on eight miscues by ICC to take a 21-12 lead. Camryn Stafford, Nia Williams, & Derria Edwards all scored to draw to within 21-18 but the Lakers stayed on the attack and opened a 32-22 lead and held a 36-28 half-time advantage.
What ICC needed was a strong start to the second half, but four ICC turnovers made the Laker lead grow to a 48-33. Stafford nailed a three-pointer (assist Sh’coria Metts) and Nia Williams scored on a layup cut the deficit to 51-38, but a Laker three-pointer just before the third quarter buzzer gave LLC a 55-40 lead heading into the fourth. The Cougars displayed a little more energy but Lake Land was firmly in control and coasted to the win.
Gordon (9 pts/3 asts) Jones (1 reb/1 ast) McNamee (6 reb/4 pts) Edwards (15 pts/5 stls/3 reb) Stafford (12 pts/3 reb/2 ast) Buchanan (3 pts/2 stls/2 asts) Gray (8 reb/5 pts) Metts (3 asts/2 reb) Williams (4 pts) Evans (3 pts) Gibbs (2 reb)
