Blue Crew Powers #7 ICC Over #9 LLCC
The ICC “Blue Crew” (aka non-starters) helped power the #7 ICC women’s basketball team to an 85-62 win over #9 Lincoln Land on Sunday afternoon at Ramsey Gym. The Cougars’ seven reserves (Samaiya Buchanan, Keijah Gray, Sh’coria Metts, Nia Williams, Dayja Evans, Ayanna Gibbs, & Kristyn Mitchell) scored 47 points to the Loggers’ 6 points from the bench. Those “Super 7” combined to go an astonishing 19-26 from the field (73%) to help ICC earn the win.
The Cougars’ front line scored early on baskets by Cierra McNamee, Camryn Stafford, and a Mitchell put-back. The guards then chimed in as Buchanan and Kayla Gordon scored on drives but LLCC still took a 14-10 lead. The Loggers were up 16-15 after the first period, but ICC cranked up the defense and held the Loggers to just 21% shooting in the second quarter and got two fast break buckets by Buchanan and scores by Williams and Derria Edwards which gave ICC a 36-25 halftime edge.
The Blue & Gold used solid half-court defense and better offensive efficiency to extend their halftime lead with Williams baseline jumper (assist Stafford) and Gray scored on a put-back to put ICC up 42-29. A steal by Gibbs turned into a layup for Metts (assist Gibbs) to give ICC their biggest lead at 44-29 with 5:15 in the third. Despite two three-pointers from Evans (assists Gibbs), the Cougars started turning the ball over and had poor shot selection, allowing the Loggers to cut the ICC lead back to 54-47 at the end of the third. LLCC whittled the Cougar lead down to 54-49 early in the fourth when Buchanan answered with a three-pointer from the right wing (assist Gibbs) and followed that up with a layup (assist Courtney Jones). Two layups by Kayla Gordon pushed the lead back to 63-54 with 7:00 minutes to play and ICC kept the defensive pressure on, holding the Loggers scoreless for over four minutes while getting a trey from Metts (assist Jones), two layups from McNamee (assists Gordon & Williams) along with free throws, which gave ICC a 78-58 lead and allowed them to coast to the final horn.
Gordon (8 pts/3ast) Jones (5 ast) McNamee (12 pts/7reb) Edwards (15 pts/7reb/5ast) Stafford (5reb/4pts) Buchanan (11pts/2stl) Gray (2pts/2reb) Metts (9 pts/2reb) Williams (11pts/4asts/4reb) Evans (6pts) Gibbs (4pts/4reb/3asts) Mitchell (8reb/4pts/2blks)
The Cougars, now 6-0 overall (2-0 in Region 24 & MWAC play) will host #8 Lake Land on Thursday at 5:30 pm at Ramsey Gym.
