Metts Hits Game Winner to Down Moberly

Sh’coria Metts hit a three-pointer with 11 seconds to lift the #9 ICC women’s basketball team to a thrilling 59-58 win over #14 (in NJCAA DI) Moberly Area on Saturday, February 6 at Ramsey Gym. Moberly held a 58-56 lead with 25 seconds left and on the next possession Ayanna Gibbs penetrated the lane and kicked out to an open Metts on the right baseline who drilled the trey for the go-ahead basket. The Cougar defense stayed tough the final 11 seconds, forcing MACC into an errant three-point attempt as the buzzer sounded.

The game was tight the entire contest as ICC held a 12-10 lead after one quarter and a 30-26 halftime lead. The Cougars had a 31-20 lead with 4:38 in the third period after a Samaiya Buchanan basket, but Moberly caught back up in the final frame to take a 56-52 lead with 2:49 to play. Camryn Stafford scored on a nice pass from Derria Edwards and Ayanna Gibbs hit a jumper to tie the score at 56-all. MACC forced a steal and got a layup to take a 58-56 lead, setting up Metts’s three-pointer for the win.

ICC controlled the boards with a 42-25 rebounding edge and held the Greyhounds to 33% shooting on the afternoon which helped offset 27 Cougar turnovers. The Cougars had a balanced attack as Gibbs tallied a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds, while Edwards had 9 points and 5 rebounds. Cierra McNamee had 8 points and 8 rebounds, while Courtney Jones had 8 points and 4 rebounds.

ICC, now 4-0, will open Midwest Athletic Conference (MWAC) play on Thursday, February 12 at Danville Area CC at 5:00 pm.
