Cougars Dominate LTC for 1st Win
The #9 ICC women’s basketball team used a dominant second half to roll to a 95-46 win over Lincoln Trail College at Ramsey Gym on Friday night. The Cougars, playing in their first game of the 2021 season, struggled finishing on bunnies in the first half, but picked up the defense and got the running game going in the latter half to tally 59 points and get the win.
Derria Edwards (Peoria HS) started her college career with a bang as she hit two three-pointers in the quarter to boost the Cougars to an early 16-10 lead. She was helped inside on buckets by forwards Camryn Stafford (Illini Bluffs HS), Kristyn Mitchell (Collinsville HS), and Cierra McNamee (Moline HS) as ICC worked the kinks out to take a 22-10 lead after one quarter.
LTC started the quarter on a 7-0 run to draw to within 22-17, forcing ICC to call a timeout. After Sh’coria Metts (Peoria HS) took a charge, a layup by Mitchell and a trey from Dayja Evans (Louisville, KY) helped ICC gain a 27-18 cushion, and free throws and a bucket by McNamee gave the Cougars their halftime lead of a dozen at 36-24.
Edwards got the first two scores of the second half and then McNamee scored the next eight points while the Cougars turned up the defense. ICC improved their rebounding effort, as Courtney Jones (Morton HS) & Samaiya Buchanan (Minneapolis, MN) corralled several boards to get the transition game going headed into the fourth with a 54-33 lead.
The Cougars exploded for 41 points in the final quarter (the second-most in school history) due to more aggressive pressure and sharing the ball on the offensive end. Kayla Gordon (O’Fallon HS) finished in transition and Metts got a steal and layup, Keijah Gray (Belleville West HS) had an old-fashioned three-point play, and Mitchell and McNamee traded getting buckets on post feeds for the final margin.
The Cougars, now 1-0, will play next on Wednesday, Feb. 3 against Wabash Valley at 5 pm on Ramsey Gym. Fans can again view the livestream on the Cougars YouTube channel or hear Alex Staab’s audio call on Mixlr.
