Stoewer Helps Cougars Down Parkland

Summer Stoewer’s 23 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 steals guided the #13 ICC women’s basketball team to a 64-57 triumph over region rival Parkland College on Wednesday night at Ramsey Gym.  While Stoewer was the only one to scratch double figures for the hosts, Cougars got contributions from up and down the lineup to get the win over the Cobras (21-5).  ICC again shared the ball well, dishing out 20 assists (8 by Josi Becker) which led to 27 field goals on the evening.

End of 1st Quarter:  ICC 20, Parkland 11

The Cougar defense was locked in from the tip as they held PC to 29% shooting in the quarter, helping kick-start the offense.  The teams traded scores early with the Cobras taking a 7-6 lead, but Becker found Moriah Ward inside to start a 14-4 run.  Stoewer got a steal and a layup and then scored another hoop putting ICC up 12-7.  Maia Marshall got out in transition for a layup (assist Becker), Camryn Stafford hit a jumper (assist Sh’coria Metts), and Jordyn Hare added two field goals (assists Becker) for the lead.

Halftime: ICC 30, PC 23

Becker found Stafford for another score as ICC went up 22-13, but Parkland went on an 8-1 run to draw to within 23-22 as ICC had empty offensive possessions.  Stoewer corralled a Ward blocked shot and found a streaking Marshall with a perfect pass for a layup and Ward added a layup (assist Courtney Heffren) to push the lead back up to 30-21 at the break.

End of 3rd:  ICC 45, Parkland 36

ICC changed up their offensive attack which paid dividends as Ayanna Gibbs got rolling for six points while Stoewer added a basket (assist Gibbs) and ICC took their biggest lead at 38-25 with 6:07 to play.  The lead became 40-27 on a Metts basket (assist Marshall) but scoring slowed down until Stoewer splashed in a three-pointer (assist Hare) and then got a steal and layup to put ICC up nine heading into the final stanza.

Fourth quarter:

Stoewer tossed in another three-ball (assist Becker) and Ward added a field goal (assist Becker) putting ICC up 50-39.  ICC got another three-pointer, this time from Heffren (assist Gibbs) for a 53-43 advantage, but Parkland dug in and forced five Cougar turnovers which allowed them to go on a 12-2 run and knot the score at 55-all with 2:50 remaining.  Heffren found Ward on the next possession for a score and Marshall knifed in the paint for a layup to give ICC a 59-55 lead with 1:45 to play.  The Cougars forced two PC turnovers and Gibbs got a steal which Stoewer turned into a basket to give ICC a 61-55 cushion with :39 seconds.  Stoewer finished out the game with free throws for the final margin.
