Stoewer, Hare Lead Cougars in Win over DACC

Summer Stoewer and Jordyn Hare combined for 38 points to help the #13 ICC women’s basketball team to a 64-51 win over Danville Area on Saturday afternoon in Ramsey Gym.  Both players were 8-12 from the field, as Stoewer connected on five three-pointers en route to 21 points while Hare added 17 points.  The Cougars worked defensively to force 29 DACC turnovers and shared the ball well, dishing out 21 assists to score 26 baskets.

End of 1st:  ICC 21, DACC 15

Stoewer came out sizzling as she outscored the Jaguars by herself on the way to a 17-point quarter.  She nailed two three-pointers in the first minute of the game against the DACC zone, followed by a Hare layup to put ICC up 8-0.  The Cougar defense was engaged, forcing turnovers on the first three Jaguar possessions.  Stoewer added two more missiles and assisted Hare on a jumper to put ICC up 16-6 at the 3:33 mark.  The Cougars had some empty possessions but smartly got the ball back in the hands of Stoewer, who hit another three and a mid-range jumper.

Halftime:  ICC 33, DACC 28

The Cougars extended their lead to 24-15 on a three-pointer from Maia Marshall (assist Josi Becker), but missed a lot of chances inside, allowing DACC to stay close.  Stoewer added another basket and Gibbs got free inside for a hoop (assists Becker) but the Jaguars converted on free throws to cut their deficit to 28-24.  Hare added an old-fashioned three-point play and a jumper to complete the first half scoring.

End of 3rd:  ICC 54, DACC 38

ICC ratcheted up the defense in the third and got the ball moving on offense to get better shots to spring for a 42-29 lead.  Hare hit another jumper and took a charge, Camryn Stafford made two free throws, and Courtney Heffren got an offensive rebound for a put-back to help the cause.  Moriah Ward then caught fire, attacking the hoop for four straight buckets to put ICC up 52-33.

Fourth quarter:

Hare worked free on offense for two more scores (assists Marshall & Stoewer) and Marshall got a steal and a layup to push the lead to 62-42 with just under 5:00 remaining.  ICC went through a drought to finish the game as they managed only one more field goal by Hare as DACC ended the game on a 9-2 run for the final margin.
