ICC Ladies Sneak Out Win in Godfrey

The #13 ICC women’s basketball used a big second half to rally for a 67-64 win over Lewis & Clark in Godfrey on Thursday night. The Trailblazers nailed seven three-pointers in the first half to grab a 29-17 advantage and stretched the lead to 17 points midway through the third period before the Cougars dug in and clawed back for the win.

End of the 1st: Lewis & Clark 12, ICC 6

6 points—that’s not a misprint. ICC came out sluggish, shooting just 3-18 in the opening period to go along with five turnovers. Ayanna Gibbs scored all 6 Cougar points.

Halftime: L&C up 29-17

ICC got their running game going to score on 4 of their first 6 possessions with baskets from Maia Marshall, two by Gibbs, & a Camryn Stafford three-ball (assists Stoewer, Marshall, & two from Josi Becker), making the score 21-15, but the Cougars only managed one basket the last six minutes while Lewis & Clark stayed hot to take a double-digit lead. Stats for the first half saw the Cougars shooting just 8-34 from the field (23%) with only Gibbs, Stafford, and Marshall scoring while the team committed 12 turnovers.

End of 3rd: L&C up 47-43

Gibbs and Becker combined for the first six points but the Trailblazers scored on six consecutive possessions to go up 44-27 at the 5:00 mark. The Cougars had two choices, fight or fold, and they banded together and fought. Marshall came in and provided a spark, scoring six points while Becker added a layup. Becker found Moriah Ward for a layup and also added a free throw jumper. Courtney Heffren hit a jumper (assist Becker), Becker added two freebies, and Marshall got a layup (assist Stoewer), completing a 16-3 run at the end of the quarter inching the Cougars closer.

Fourth Quarter:

Stoewer and Becker started the quarter with back-to-back three-pointers (assists Gibbs & Ward) but L&C answered with a trey to stay up 52-49. Stoewer nailed another bomb (assist Becker) and Ward added two layups (assists Becker) but the Trailblazers still maintained a narrow 60-58 lead until Stoewer hit her 3rd trey of the quarter, putting ICC ahead 61-60 with 1:53 left. L&C made two free throws to go back up 62-61 but Gibbs converted a layup and the Cougars led 63-62. ICC got a stop but missed their shot, to which L&C answered with a go-ahead basket for a 64-63 advantage with :39 seconds left. Gibbs was fouled on a drive to the hoop and made both free throws for a 65-64 lead with :20 seconds to play.
