Cougar Ladies Extinguish Blazers

Five players scored in double figures to lead the #14 ICC women’s basketball team to an 84-47 victory over John Wood CC on Saturday afternoon at Ramsey Gym in MWAC/Region 24 action. Summer Stoewer (20), Ayanna Gibbs (15), Courtney Heffren (12), Camryn Stafford (12), and Maia Marshall (11) all netted double digits while Josi Becker ran the controls (8 assists) to push ICC’s record to 18-6 overall, 4-1 in Region 24, and 4-0 in MWAC play. The defense was also strong as the Cougars snagged 12 steals and limited JWCC to 32% FG shooting on the afternoon.


End of 1st: ICC up 17-13

The Cougars got several players engaged early as Heffren, Stoewer, Gibbs, and Stoewer hit for scores. The Blazers evened the score at 13-all but ICC took the lead on a nice drive from Gibbs and a another basket (assist Becker).


Halftime: ICC up 32-20

ICC started the quarter with a 7-0 run as they forced two turnovers and Becker and Stoewer nailed back-to-back three’s (assists Gibbs). Heffren, Marshall, and Jordyn Hare added baskets (all assisted by Becker) to increase the lead at half.


End of 3rd: ICC up 53-33

Stafford and Stoewer opened the half with back-to-back treys (assists Stoewer & Gibbs) to give ICC more of a cushion. Sh’coria Metts provided a spark on defense with three steals and Ariana Washington assisted Becker and Stafford for layups and scored a basket of her own for the twenty-point cushion.


Fourth quarter:

The Cougars began the quarter with a 21-2 run to put the game away for good. Highlights included an old-fashioned three-point play by Marshall, followed by Stoewer’s fifth long-range bomb (assist Hare). Hare owned the boards while Metts got out on the break (assist Marshall) for two layups for the final margin.

Other: In honor of National Girls & Women in Sports Day, the Cougars recognized five area junior high girls basketball teams who finished in the top 4 at their respective IESA State Tournament: Germantown Hills 7th & 8th grade, Canton Ingersoll 7th & 8th grade, and Illini Bluffs 8th grade. Retired ICC athletic director and volleyball coach Sue Sinclair also addressed the crowd at halftime sharing how athletics has impacted her life.
