Defense, Rebounding Leads to Cougar Win

A strong defensive effort and big rebounding edge helped the #16 ICC women’s basketball team to a 68-42 victory at Danville Area CC on Saturday afternoon. The Cougars held DACC to 28% shooting in the first half and owned a 47-27 edge on the glass (19 were offensive) to get the win.

End of 1st qtr: ICC up 16-10

ICC knew they would see Danville’s patented zone defense and the plan was to get the ball in the paint, which they did as Josi Becker found Ayanna Gibbs for the first two scores inside. Summer Stoewer countered from the outside with back-to-back threes (assists Courtney Heffren & Gibbs) and then hit a runner putting ICC up 12-10. The Cougars locked in on defense, holding the Jags scoreless the rest of the period until midway through the 2nd quarter. Moriah Ward & Jordyn Hare added scores to help the cause.

Halftime: ICC up 31-16

The Cougars went on a 12-0 run to start the stanza as Heffren hit a long two (assist Becker) and Ward added two scores. Hare finished in transition (assist Maia Marshall) and Sh’coria Metts’s mid-range jumper gave ICC a 28-12 lead with 3:20 to play. Stoewer added a three-pointer (assist Gibbs) for the halftime lead.

End of 3rd: ICC 58, Danville 32

Gibbs slithered through the gaps in the zone for the first six points (assists Heffren & Becker) to keep ICC on the attack. Stafford added a basket and then Stoewer again nailed back-to-back three-pointers (assists Stafford & Becker) to make it 49-25. Ward scored off a Stoewer pass and then Heffren found Stafford and Gibbs for baskets to keep DACC at bay.
