Greyhounds Outrun Cougars

The #10 ICC women’s basketball took a tumble on Saturday afternoon, losing  75-50 to D1 junior college Moberly Area at Ramsey Gym.  The Greyhounds were better in all areas, out-rebounding ICC 52-37 and holding them to 29% shooting.  The loss snapped ICC’s seven-game winning streak and the program’s 28-game home winning streak, which ironically was broken by Moberly Area on January 6, 2018.  Moberly moves to 13-3 while the Cougars drop to 10-5.

First Quarter:  Moberly 18, Cougars 12

Things went well for ICC the first eight minutes of the game as they battled to an 8-8 tie.  Moriah Ward scored two baskets inside (assists Josi Becker & Camryn Stafford), Stafford added a put back and Jordyn Hare added a jumper (assist Maia Marshall) with 4:00 remaining.  The Cougar offense stalled, only managing two more baskets, while MACC kept the foot on the gas.

Halftime:  Moberly up 41-22

MACC started the quarter on an 11-3 run as the Cougars couldn’t muster any offense due to missed bunnies and the Greyhound defense.  Summer Stoewer, Becker, and Stoewer were the only ones who scored in the quarter. Moberly outscored ICC 23-10 to take a big halftime lead.

End of 3rd:  Moberly up 52-35

Hare added two jumpers, Stafford added a field goal and some free throws, and Ward and Metts each added scores but Moberly controlled the game with their defense, which didn’t allow the Cougars any chance at making a dent in the deficit.

Fourth quarter:

The Greyhound lead continued to increase as ICC couldn’t get anything going on the offensive end and had no answer for MACC’s offensive rebounding.  Metts and Courtney Heffren added threes and Stoewer had five points, but it wasn’t enough. Final stats showed the Cougars with only 11 assists; the only statistical category they beat Moberly in was free throws, where ICC was 14-18.

Becker (6 pts, 3 reb, 1 ast) Hare (6 pts, 4 reb) Brown (2 reb) Ward (8 pts, 5 reb) Stoewer (12 pts, 6 reb) Marshall (2 reb, 2 ast) Metts (5 pts, 4 reb) Heffren (3 pts)

Next up:  Tuesday, Jan. 7 at 6 pm at Ramsey Gym vs. Black-Hawk Moline (10-4).  The game should be live-streamed at

Also, we want to thank Bob Thommen for doing the stat board at all of our home games.  We inadvertently left him off our list of thank you’s in our last email and want to give him proper recognition for his time and efforts in helping our program.
