Cougars Down Sauk, Advance to Winners’ Bracket
The #10 ICC women’s basketball team shook off the rust from Christmas break to score an 82-36 win over Sauk Valley Community College in the opening round of the 39th Cougar Holiday Tourney on Saturday night. The Cougars dominated from start to finish, scoring 45 points off of Skyhawk turnovers to get the win, moving their record to 8-4 on the season.
First quarter: ICC 15-10
ICC only converted 4 of 19 first quarter field goals but thankfully went 6-6 from the charity stripe to help get on track. A Courtney Heffren steal turned into two points by Ayanna Gibbs, Summer Stoewer nailed a three-pointer (assist Ayanna Gibbs) and Camryn Stafford added a score (Josi Becker assist) to give ICC the lead.
Halftime: ICC 39-16
The Cougars broke things open in the second quarter as they limited SVCC to just six points as Stoewer kick-started the defense. Her two steals cashed into points and put the Cougars up 28-14. Baskets by Moriah Ward (assist Gibbs), Gibbs (assist Becker), Maia Marshall (Ward assist) and Stoewer (assist Becker) gave ICC momentum heading into the break. ICC’s shooting was much improved as they went 11-19 on field goals in the quarter while holding SVCC to 3-13 field goal shooting.
End of 3rd quarter: 56-33
ICC attacked the Skyhawk zone defense with rebounding and drives as Ward scored inside and Becker converted on an old-fashioned three-point play. The Cougars limited SVCC to just six points in the first 8:30 of the quarter and pushed their lead to 56-22 as lots of Cougars contributed on the offensive end (Ward, Becker, Stafford, Sh’coria Metts, Gibbs, & Catora Brown) but Sauk went on an 11-0 run in the last 1:30 as the Cougars got careless with the ball.
Sauk ran out of gas in the fourth and the Cougars took advantage as Stoewer and Ward combined for the first 8 points to get ICC back in the right direction while the defense limited SVCC to just 3 points.
Becker (7 asts, 5 pts) Hare (6 pts, 6 reb, 3 asts) Brown (3 pts) Ward (12 pts, 10 reb, 1 chg taken) Stoewer (17 pts, 6 stls) Stafford (8 pts) Marshall (6
