Stafford & Company Down Eagles

Freshman Camryn Stafford’s career-high 26 points helped the #10 ICC women’s basketball team to a 92-59 win over Rock Valley College on Tuesday night at Ramsey Gym.  The freshman center (Illini Bluffs HS) dominated in the paint and hit on 12 of 15 field goals while the team dished out a season-high 27 assists to score 40 baskets to get the win over RVC (9-5).

End of 1st Quarter:  ICC 26, RVC 18

The Cougars started out in high gear, scurrying to leads of 11-2 and 19-10 as they moved the ball well and found open teammates, dishing out 8 assists in the first five minutes (2 each by Summer Stoewer, Moriah Ward, Josi Becker, and Ayanna Gibbs).  RVC stayed close by hitting 4 three-pointers while ICC countered with Stoewer & Stafford (6 points each) and Gibbs (5 points).

Halftime:  ICC 44, RVC 41

The Eagles stayed hot from the perimeter and grabbed the lead at 32-30 as they continued to hit long-range shots.  ICC went back on top, 34-32 on Gibbs and Becker baskets.  Stafford went back to work in the paint followed by a Stoewer trey to give the Cougars a narrow advantage at the half.  The first half saw RVC go 8-18 from three-point range, allowing them to stay close.

End of 3rd:  ICC 73, RVC 49

Defense was a focus during the halftime chat and the Cougars responded as they held the guests to 3-18 shooting and 0 made threes in the 3rd.  On the offensive end, ICC rode the backs of Stafford, Gibbs, and Ward as they sparked the Cougars to a 13-1 run to start the half and allow ICC to grab a 57-42 advantage midway through the quarter.  Stafford and Gibbs turned two offensive rebounds into scores and then Stoewer snagged a steal and hit Gibbs for a layup, putting the Cougars up 67-46.

Fourth quarter:

Defense stayed a focus for the Cougars in the fourth as they still kept their intensity, allowing them to continue to pull away.  Stafford stayed strong as she converted an old-fashioned three-point play and another hoop (assists Gibbs & Courtney Heffren) and the Cougars rolled from there.
