Stoewer’s Runner Lifts Cougars; #9 ICC 64, Iowa Central 63
The basketball gods were unkind to the ICC women’s basketball team last Friday as they lost on the last possession of the game at NIACC. A week later, however, they showed favor to the Cougars as Summer Stoewer hit a runner in the lane with :03 to lift #9 ICC to a 64-63 win over Iowa Central. The game was a back-and-forth affair as there were twelve lead changes and the Cougars coming out on top.
End of 1st quarter: ICC 17, IA Central 13
ICC came out running as Maia Marshall and Camryn Stafford scored in transition (assists Josi Becker & Stoewer). The offense kept clicking as Stafford, Raven Overman, and Jordyn Hare went to work in the paint, giving ICC their largest lead of the night at 17-8, but the Tritons finished the quarter with a 5-0 to get back in it.
Halftime: IA Central 30-29
Stoewer and Ayanna Gibbs scored early but then ICC went 8 possessions without a basket, allowing IA Central to take a 26-25 lead. Stafford & Stoewer added scores to keep the game tight.
End of 3rd: IA Central 51-49
The Cougars started the half like they started the game, with Gibbs & Stafford finishing inside and Stoewer completing an old-fashioned three-point play along with another score to put ICC up 38-32. The Tritons answered with an 8-0 run to take the lead back at 40-38 and ICC stayed even on a Stoewer trey (assist Marshall) and three-point play by Raven Overman. Molli Mulder found Moriah Ward inside and Sh’coria Metts assisted Mulder on a three-pointer to finish the quarter.
The Tritons went on a surge to start the fourth and took a 57-51 lead with 7:10 remaining. ICC countered as Becker found Stoewer for another long-range bomb and Overman scored again inside but Iowa Central still held a 61-56 lead with 5:40 left. And that’s when the Cougar defense dug in, allowing the Tritons only one more field goal the rest of the game, and giving ICC a chance. Stafford scored on an offensive put back and Marshall added a basket to make it 61-60. Overman made 1 of 2 free throws to tie it at 61-all but IA Central responded with a basket to go up 63-61 with 2:33 remaining. With under a minute to play, Becker was fouled on a drive to the hoop and made one free throw to draw ICC to within 63-62 with :45 seconds left. On the ensuing possession, the Tritons had a three-second lane violation so ICC got the ball back with :25 seconds. On the Cougar possession, the ball got knocked out of bounds so ICC in-bounded with :08 left. Stoewer drove the lane and her runner bounced off the back of the rim and in with :03 left; the Tritons long pass down court went out of bounds, giving the Blue & Gold the exciting win.
