Cougars Let One Slip Away to NIACC; #7 NIACC 82, #5 ICC 81
The #5 ICC women’s basketball team suffered an 82-81 loss to #7 North Iowa Area CC on Friday night at the Konigsmark Klassic in Mason City, IA. The Cougars held a six-point lead midway through the fourth quarter & also had a two-point lead with :15 seconds left, but the Trojans hit a three-pointer from the baseline to take the lead & ICC’s shot in the paint with :03 seconds rimmed out.
1st quarter score: ICC 19, NIACC 16
The Cougars hit 3 three-pointers (Maia Marshall, Catora Brown, & Sh’coria Metts) along with inside baskets by Moriah Ward, Raven Overman, & Camryn Stafford to take an early lead.
Halftime: ICC 36, NIACC 35
Josi Becker had a nice finish at the hoop and Molli Mulder splashed a three-pointer to help keep ICC in the lead. The Cougars got to the free throw line, but only converted 4-10 from the stripe, allowing NIACC to stay close.
3rd quarter score: NIACC 60, ICC 59
ICC got more post touches to start the half as Ayanna Gibbs, Stafford, Overman, & Ward combined for scores but NIACC heated up from long-range, nailing five treys in the period to take the lead.
The Cougars got rolling early to start the fourth, as Jordyn Hare, Ward, & Marshall scores gave ICC a 70-64 lead, however, that was short-lived as NIACC turned up the defense and went on a 10-2 run to go up a 76-72. ICC responded with two baskets by Stafford, a Becker layup and Marshall three-pointer which knotted the score at 79-all. The Cougars forced a turnover on the next possession, and Ariana Washington hit Ward for a layup to grab the lead but NIACC hit a three-pointer to take the go-ahead score and steal the win.
