Cougars Defeat Sandburg; #12 ICC 76, Carl Sandburg 51

The #12 ICC women’s basketball team used balanced scoring and a strong second half to score a 76-51 win over Carl Sandburg on Saturday afternoon in Galesburg. The Cougars outscored CSC 24-7 in the 3rd quarter to break the game open and moved their record to 6-4 on the season.

End of 1st qtr: ICC 21, CSC 15

ICC fell behind 7-4 before using a 15-3 run (scores by Josi Becker, Ayanna Gibbs, Camryn Stafford, and two threes by Summer Stoewer) to go up 19-10.

Halftime: ICC up 32-26

The Cougar defense held CSC scoreless the first seven possessions of the quarter, but only mustered scores by Becker and Maia Marshall to increase their lead to 25-15. Stoewer hit another trey, Marshall added a layup, and Moriah Ward added two free throws but the Chargers stayed close with solid outside shooting.

End of 3rd: ICC up 56-33

ICC used better teamwork to get the shots they wanted and it paid off to break the game open. Sh’coria Metts got things started with a hard baseline drive, Marshall hit a free throw and then found Metts for another layup to go up 37-26. Ward scored inside (assist Camryn Stafford), followed by a Marshall trey and another Ward basket to stay up 44-33. The Cougar defense then held CSC scoreless the rest of the quarter, igniting a 12-0 run heading into the 4th. Stoewer (5 pts), Courtney Heffren, Jordyn Hare, and Ayanna Gibbs (3pts) all contributed.

Final stanza

Becker started off the quarter with a three-ball (assist Hare) and Stafford scored on a post-up (assist Becker) to keep things rolling. Gibbs, Ward, and Hare got scores inside and the Cougars coasted from there.
