Cougars Back on Winning Track; #14 ICC 85, Augustana JV 54

The #14 ICC women’s basketball used points in the paint and a solid defensive effort to down Augustana JV 85-54 on Thursday night in Ramsey Gym.  ICC broke the Viking press in the first half and worked for good shots in their half-court offense, racking up 64 points in the paint while holding Auggie to just 29% to get the win.

End of 1st quarter:  23-14

Josi Becker, Summer Stoewer, and Maia Marshall knifed through the Viking press to find Ayanna Gibbs and Moriah Ward for 14 of the Cougars’ first 18 points to put ICC up 18-4.  Auggie countered with a run to draw to within 19-12 but Ward and Marshall finished the quarter for scores to give the Cougars some cushion.

Halftime:  48-25

The Cougars started the quarter on a 9-0 run on a Ward basket (assist Marshall), Stoewer trey (assist Ward), put-back from Ward, and steal by Becker who hit Marshall for a layup to go up 32-14.  A Raven Overman basket (assist Sh’coria Metts) and Molli Mulder score (assist Becker) kept ICC on the attack while the defense hung tough.  Catora Brown hit two free throws and Gibbs added a put-back to nearly double-up Augustana at the half.

End of 3rd quarter: 68-43

ICC pushed their lead to 55-28 to begin the half but the Cougar defense experienced a letdown in the third as the Vikings rattled off 18 points in the quarter.  Highlights included a layup from Metts (assist Becker) and defensive rebound by Stoewer who hit Ariana Washington who passed ahead to Mulder for a score on a nice fast break.

Final quarter

Camryn Stafford and Stoewer combined for scores to give ICC a 74-46 advantage early in the fourth and ICC rolled from there.
