Bears Topple Cougar Ladies; Southwest MS 79, #5 ICC 60
The ICC women’s basketball team didn’t receive any Southern hospitality on the basketball court while in Louisiana as they dropped their second game in as many days with a 79-60 loss to D1 juco Southwest Mississippi on Saturday afternoon.
1st quarter score: SW MS 17, ICC 11
Josi Becker scored the first basket of the game & assisted Moriah Ward on a layup for a 4-2 lead but it was the only lead the Cougars had all day as they missed several early scoring opportunities and dug themselves a hole.
Halftime: SW MS 36-29
The Bears kicked up the defense, forcing four ICC turnovers on the first 7 possessions to help stretch their lead to 30-19 midway through the quarter. Kamryn Cuevas hit a jumper (assist Becker), followed by Maia Marshall & Raven Overman scores to help close the gap back to seven at the break.
3rd quarter score: SW MS 59-45
Cuevas scored the first five points of the stanza (assists Becker & Marshall) to draw ICC to within 38-34, but Southwest answered with a 9-2 spurt to go up 47-36. ICC struggled with quality possessions, which allowed the Bears to go back up by double digits.
Raven Overman was a bright spot as she finished inside for some easy scores but SW MS continued to dominate and pulled away for the win.
