Cougars Down DACC
Sophomore forwards Abby Coates and Madison Faulkner combined to score 29 points to guide the No. 1 ICC women’s basketball team to a 57-27 victory over Danville Area in M-WAC action on Feb. 23.
Coates had 15 points (7-8 field goal shooting) while Faulkner added 14 points to lead the charge. The Cougars also held DACC to 26 percent field goal shooting while out rebounding the hosts 39-26 to get their 27th consecutive win on the season.
Both squads struggled out of the gates as the Cougars held a narrow 7-5 lead after the first quarter. Coates got things going as she scored back-to-back baskets followed by a Marquitta Easley jumper to go up 15-5.
ICC went up 22-8 as Faulkner, Coates, and Ward all scored but the Jags went on a 6-0 run as ICC held a 22-14 lead at recess.
The Blue & Gold picked up their defense in the third which kick-started a 12-0 run on baskets by Coates, Faulkner, and Summer Stoewer to gain a 34-14 advantage. Kathy Pinnock-Branford and Josi Becker led the defensive effort as well as found the shooters as they each assisted Summer Stoewer and Emma Henderson for three-pointers which gave ICC a 40-19 edge after three quarters.
Following two Faulkner free throws, Becker nailed a three of her own to go up 45-21. Coates and Moriah Ward combined for a 7-0 run to boost the lead to 52-21 and then freshman Arianna Washington finished off the game with a 4-4 effort from the free-throw line for the final margin.
