Women’s Basketball Rolls Over John Wood

The No. 1 ICC women’s basketball team put together their most complete effort in quite some time and it paid dividends as they rolled over M-WAC foe John Wood Community College by a score of 75-39 on Wednesday night at Ramsey Gym.

The Cougars used a smothering defense to hold JWCC to 31 percent field goal shooting (16-52) and swiped 16 steals while moving the ball well on offense to shoot 52 percent from the field (33-64) for the win.

ICC’s defense was engaged from the get-go as they got a stop on the first possession and got out in transition with an Abby Coates layup, assisted by Marquitta Easley.

Easley scored a layup on a set play to tie the score at 4-all, and then the Cougars turned on the jets, going on a 13-0 run as Madison Faulkner nailed a mid-range jumper, with an assist from Summer Stoewer, Coates scored again, assisted by Kathy Pinnock-Branford, Stoewer netted a 3-pointer, assisted by Easley, and then returned the favor to hit Easley for a score.

Easley scored again in transition and then Jordyn Hare added an offensive put-back to make the score 17-4 just six minutes into the game.  ICC had a couple of empty possessions, but finished the quarter with two Coates’ baskets on assists by Stoewer to go up 21-9.

ICC steadily increased their lead as they caused nine Blazer turnovers in the period.  Coates swiped a steal that turned into an Easley layup, KPB finished inside on a Stoewer assist, and then Emma Henderson splashed in a 3-pointer, assisted by Coates, to take a 31-14 lead. ICC kept the defense strong while Easley added two layups and Stoewer a free throw to put ICC up 38-17 at half.

The question for the second half was, would ICC let JW back in the contest or would they slam the door, and that question was answered early as Easley got a steal and hit Faulkner for a layup, and Pinnock-Branford added baskets to put the Cougars up 46-22. Moriah Ward added a rebound basket and then Stoewer followed that up with a steal and layup and the Cougars ended up doubling up JW 52-26 heading into the fourth.

The Cougars continued to move the ball well as Easley hit Coates in the gap of the Blazer zone for a score and then Stoewer found Ward inside to push the score out to 60-32. ICC kept the defense strong, forcing five Blazer turnovers with Henderson getting a steal and layup followed by a Josi Becker 3-pointer. Hare wrapped up the scoring on an assist by KPB and the Cougars moved their record to 26-1, 7-0 in MWAC play.
