Lady Cougars Drub Trolls
All 11 players who suited up for the No. 2 Illinois Central College women’s basketball team scored in a 94-36 drubbing of Trinity Christian College on Thursday night at Ramsey Gym.
In addition to nearly hitting the century mark, the Cougars outrebounded the Trolls 59-27 and snagged 19 steals on the night.
The Lady Cougars got out to a fast start, going on a 22-1 run to open the game and never looked back. All five starters, Abby Coates, Marquitta Easley, Kathy Pinnock-Branford, Summer Stoewer and Moriah Ward, scored during the opening run to establish control of the game. Easley finished in the paint, Stoewer and Pinnock-Branford each nailed 3-pointers. Pinnock-Branford took a charge, and Ward and Coates snatched up what seemed like every rebound as ICC flexed their muscles early and often. The Blue and Gold took a 25-9 lead after the first quarter and a 54-13 lead at the half to coast to their 17th consecutive win, moving their record to 17-1 overall.
Other highlights were: A nice finish by Josi Becker in transition, Jordyn Hare getting out on the break and also pulling down six rebounds, Catora Brown nailing a 3-pointer and also connecting on both of her free throws, Raven Overman pulling down six boards, including five offensive, Ariana Washington splashing in a 3-pointer, and Emma Henderson nailing a 3-pointer and seeing some action at the point guard position.
Becker (4 pts, 4 reb, 3 asts) Hare (9 pts, 6 reb) Brown (5 pts, 2 reb) Overman (7 pts, 6 reb) Ward (12 reb, 8 pts) Washington (3 pts, 2 reb) Stoewer (13 ps, 6 reb, 4 stls) Pinnock-Branford (10 pts, 5 reb, 5 asts, 4 stls) Henderson (7 pts, 3 reb, 2 asts, 2 stls) Coates (14 pts, 6 reb) Easley (14 pts, 4 reb, 4 asts, 3 stls)
ICC will travel to Mattoon this Saturday, Jan. 19 to face No. 13 Lake Land College at 2:00 pm in Laker Fieldhouse. The game can be seen live on www.facebook.com/LakersBB/.
In Case of Inclement Weather:
The weather forecast (3-6 inches of snow and 30-mph winds) for central Illinois does not look favorable for traveling on Saturday but as of now, we are planning on playing at Lake Land. A decision will be made by 9 am on Saturday whether the game will be played; check Coach Redeker’s twitter (@KarrieRedeker) for information. If the game is cancelled, the back-up plan is to reschedule for Tuesday, Jan. 22 at 6 pm in Mattoon.
Saturday will be ICC’s first Region 24 contest of the year. Currently, there are seven teams in Region 24: Danville, ICC, John Wood (Quincy), Lake Land, Lewis & Clark (Godfrey), Lincoln Land (Springfield) and Parkland (Champaign). Of those seven teams, six of them (excluding Lake Land) are members of the Mid-West Athletic Conference (after 49 years as an independent, this is ICC’s first year in the conference). So, ICC will play Lake Land only one time during the regular season, but will play the other MWAC teams in a home and away contest. Points are awarded for each win — 2.5 points for a road win and 2.0 points for a home win. At the end of the regular season, points will be tallied and then the teams will be seeded for the Region 24 Tournament, which will take place March 6-10, with the winner of the Region 24 tourney advancing to the national tournament.
