Lady Cougars Topple Black Hawk
The Illinois Central College women’s basketball team shared the ball well on Tuesday night as they tied a season high of 29 assists, making 34 field goals, to garner an 80-47 win over Black Hawk College in Moline.
Point guards Kathy Pinnock-Branford (8 assists) and Josi Becker (7 assists) accounted for over half of those dimes while Abby Coates (23 points), Moriah Ward (10 points), Emma Henderson (10 points) and company took care of the scoring. The Lady Cougars, who moved up to No. 2 in the NJCAA Division II rankings released earlier in the day, have now won 16 games in a row to move their record to 16-1.
Several Cougars contributed in the early going as ICC took a 15-4 lead as Coates, Summer Stoewer, Pinnock-Branford, Marquitta Easley and Jordyn Hare all scored. Stoewer, Raven Overman and Coates added baskets which gave ICC a 22-8 first-quarter lead.
ICC started the second period on a 10-0 run as Ward scored inside, followed by three Coates’ baskets, with two assists by Pinnock-Branford and one from Easley, and an Easley layup to go up 32-9. The Braves responded with a 3-pointer and tried to get back in the contest, but three straight Henderson baskets, with two assists by Becker and one from Stoewer, kept ICC up 38-19 at the half.
The Lady Cougars extended their lead in the second half as all players saw lots of action. Highlights included a Catora Brown 3-pointer, an Ariana Washington layup, and Overman, Ward, Hare, and Coates working their skills inside for scores to keep the Braves at bay.
