5 Lady Cougars Hit Double-Digits in 89-66 Win Over LMC

Five Lady Cougars all reached double figures to propel the No. 7 Illinois Central College women’s basketball team to an 89-66 win over visiting Lake Michigan College on Saturday afternoon.

Abby Coates, Marquitta Easley, Summer Stoewer, Kathy Pinnock-Branford and Madison Faulkner all reach double digits in scoring.

The win is the Cougars’ eighth consecutive and moves their record to 8-1 on the season, while Lake Michigan dropped to 5-2.

Pinnock-Branford got a steal and layup to start the scoring and then threw a full-court strike to Easley for a layup to give ICC a 4-0 lead. LMC went on an 11-2 run as the Cougars plagued themselves with turnovers but they drew to a 13-all tie after a Stoewer three-pointer, assisted by Faulkner.

Despite Faulkner and Easley scores, the Red Hawks took a 20-17 lead after the first period.

The Cougar press got four steals to start the second period which turned into Rocky Stanley, Easley and Stoewer layups.

Coates and Faulkner added scores to put ICC up 28-21. Pinnock-Branford scored the final six points of the half, including two baskets in the last 10 seconds, assisted by Josi Becker and Emma Henderson, and the Cougars went into halftime up 39-31.

Easley and Coates then provided the offensive punch for the Cougar attack, while Stanley anchored the Cougar defense, helping ICC go up 46-33 at the 7:38 mark.

The Cougars started to crack the Red Hawk zone, getting in the paint and getting to the free throw line. ICC hit 10 of 12 free throws in the final four minutes of the quarter to take a 62-49 lead heading into the final stanza.

Stoewer nailed a three-pointer and Coates made a layup, assisted by Becker, to break the game open at 67-50. LMC answered with four straight points to draw to 67-54, but Faulkner scored inside, Stoewer went coast-to-coast for an old fashioned three-point play, and Stanley got a layup to push the lead to 74-57. Easley  got a steal, saved it from going out of bounds by dribbling behind her back, and then scored on a full court layup. The Cougars continued to play hard and closed out the game for the win.
