Benbow Paces ICC At MWAC Golf Championship
Sophomore Noah Benbow (Galesburg/Galesburg HS) garnered all-conference honors while Illinois Central College placed second in the Mid-West Athletic Conference Golf Champions held September 17 at Metamora Field Golf Club.
Benbow shot a one-over-par 72 to finish one stroke behind Vincennes’ Wyatt Roberts and Parkland’s Jalen Hodges. An NJCAA National Championship qualifier as a freshman, Benbow’s birdie putt to tie for medalist honors burned the edge but refused to fall into the cup on the 458-yard, par-4 18th hole.
ICC shot an even-par 356 in the Ryder Cup-type competition which features two-man teams playing nine holes of preferred position, alternate shot, best ball and individual ball. Parkland claimed the championship (339) with conference newcomer Vincennes third (357) and Lewis & Clark fourth (397).
Sophomore Carter Leroy (Morton/Morton HS) shot a 75 with fellow sophomores Matt Tamar (Rockford/Galesburg HS) and Jack Bumann (Woodhull/AlWood HS) added an 81 and 84, respectively. Freshman Isaac Ingold (Morton/Morton HS) had a 78 while another freshman, Matthew Cox (East Peoria/East Peoria HS), added an 83.
The MWAC championship marked the start of the rain-delayed ICC fall golf season which saw Mother Nature wash out the Cougars’ scheduled events at Black Hawk College and Lewis & Clark Community College. ICC returns to action Sept. 21-22 at the IVCC Classic.
