Cougars Zap Chargers: #15 ICC 83, Carl Sandburg 45

A dominant second half propelled the #15 ICC women’s basketball team to an 83-45 win over Carl Sandburg College Wednesday night at Ramsey Gym. The Cougars forced 35 turnovers on the evening and cashed those into 40 points, while the ICC bench held a 51-16 scoring advantage to help get the win, moving ICC’s overall record to 17-6.

The Cougars started out in high gear, dashing out to a 11-2 lead, with Abby Coates, Madison Faulkner, Bailey Larsen, and Aubrey Magro scoring and the whole unit being aggressive on defense. Krystal Walker and Kathy Pinnock Branford scored inside thanks to two Emma Henderson assists, and then Henderson scored on her own to put the Cougars up 19-2 with 2:18 left to play in the quarter. Carl Sandburg steadied themselves to close the gap to 19-7 after the first period, and then outscored ICC 14-13 in the second quarter to draw to within 32-21 at halftime.

Things started slowly for both squads to start the second half, until Walker, Jasmine Levy, Pinnock-Branford, Kellyn Maynard, and Sia Williams changed the complexion of the game as quick as a Keurig coffee maker makes your morning brew. Over a span of four and a half minutes, those ladies went on a 17-0 run with Levy scoring nine points (on three Henderson assists), and Walker, Williams, and Henderson adding baskets (two assists by Walker) and suddenly the Cougars had a comfortable 53-29 lead. The whole team was inspired by their effort, and when fresh troops came in, the intensity stayed high heading into the fourth quarter.

Williams nailed a trey (assist Pinnock-Branford) and ICC kept at it in the fourth as Larsen nailed a three off of an Abby Coates’ assist, and Kennedy Banks added six points in the final frame to keep ICC rolling. Walker and Levy cashed in on offensive put backs and ICC cruised to the final buzzer.
